Changes in communications

Changes in world

In his brief historical account of the globalized world in the 21st century, Friedman writes of an evolution from Globalization 1.0 to Globalization 3.0. The latest evolution of the globalized world is one which straddles between geographic spaces and digital spaces. Indeed through massive investments in fiber optic, the infrastructure for creating and connecting digital spaces was built, thus introducing the era of the flatten world. (Friedman 2005)

From Terra firma to terrabytes

Technology has not only mediated communication in countless ways, but that the very ways we communicate - and even the ways we talk and think about communications - are changing as a result (The New Media Consortium 2007, 1)

students today experience technology very differently than faculty do, and the gap between students’ view of technology and that of faculty is growing rapidly. Mobile phones, to name just one example, are very different tools to students than to faculty; rather than being mere tools for voice communication, these devices store music, movies, and photos, keep students in touch with their friends by text and voice, and provide access to the wider world of the Internet at any time.
